PUNKY POST-FEMINISTS
It’s some men’s dream-women in short skirts racing around a ring in roller skates, aggressively knocking and taking one another out by any means necessary. Roller Derby, however, is about anything but male approval. Roller Girls take to heart the do-it-yourself ideals of feminism, aggression, and stereotype busting. And these girls mean business.
To play roller derby, the rules are pretty simple. Five women form a squad (the Hell Marys, the Furious Truckstop Waitresses, the Rat City Rollergirls) and line up, with one jammer and four blockers. The two teams race around a track, with the blockers barring the other team’s jammer from reaching the front and scoring a point per opponent passed, always refraining from bloodshed. Of course, any other method of physical contact is welcomed…. These women get pushed, shoved, bruised and battered; they even practice the safest ways to fall and keep their fists formed to keep prevent broken fingers. Roller derby encompasses an attitude and a lifestyle – empowered, strong and rebellious women who can think for themselves and leave their mark.
So, if you want to meet and square off with Ashley Smashley, Helen Danmation, Reyna Terror or Ann Ihilation – then get involved, prove yourself and release some aggression!
